Going Private!!

I have decided it's time for my blog to go private. I fought it for so long but lately I realized that I'd rather not have my personal thoughts out there for people to critise. So....
if you would like to have access to it, please leave a comment with your email address. All comments with that information will not be published so no worried there:)
I'll probably wait about 2 weeks so I can get everyone that would like to be on the list.

Concert worth waiting for

Several months ago, Jon bought us both tickets to see Carrie Underwood at the Bridgestone Arena downtown. This was huge because he doesn't like country... at all. But come on! Carrie is HOT!!!!! Who wouldn't want to see her??!?!

So last Wednesday night, we dropped the kids off with Kristy and Rob and off we went.

Show started with some lame group called Sons of Sylvia. Sorry y'all... they sucked. Maybe just not my type of music but the guy had a major 80's comb back fro and tried to combine bluegrass with country with screaming laying on the floor rock. Not so cool guys!!!

(sooo excited for it to start! I was anyways!!)

Then is was YUMMMY OH SO YUMMY Billy Currington. Did I mention yummy??? That guy sure loves his beer too! Sings a lot about it. But that curly hair is just ..ummm yummy? He is amazing and flawless. Jon even liked him (I think?)
(see? he's smiling!)

(trust me.. even at a distance, he's pretty)

He sang a handful of songs and off he went.

Then on came Carrie Underwood. Okay so we all know she has an amazing voice. But holy hell in concert she is fabulous!!! Like...wow!!! Every song was entertaining and beautiful and goosebump city! She sang old songs like Jesus Take The Wheel all the way to her new song about her telling her mama that her man is good and everything in between!
So my friends.. if you have the chance, go see her!!! And yes I will admit- she is HOT!

(nothing like her flying around the room on a truck!!!)

Have I told you all lately how much I love Nashville?!?!?!?

My Response to a big meanie head!

Disclaimer... keep in mind this is my blog and my personal feelings and I have the right to post pretty much what I want. It may not always be pretty much it is what it is. I'm kinda childish and stubborn that way.

So a few weeks ago, Jon and I had many back and forth emails from someone that at one time had the potential to be very close to our family and a big part of our childrens lives. It got ugly and I just wanted to publicly defend myself in some of the things that were said about my family because this person didn't bother really reading them in the emails that were sent.

First of all... I was told that I have an addiction to texting. I don't disagree. I text. A lot. But do you know I hate talking on the phone? Like I have a real issue with it. I'll do it if its someone I need or want to talk with but it's a rare thing and only with a few people. I would rather txt what I need and get it over with. But this person took it too far saying I ignore my children and I'm niglecting them because I'm too busy texting.... I do not ignore my children! I couldn't if I wanted to (and there are times I reallllly want to!)!!!! They have always come first. I'm not a niglectful parent because I text someone. And I was told I have missed so much of their lives due to my texting. Okay.. this person sees us MAYBE once a yr if that!!! Who's missing out here?!?!?

And then they went on to say that in conference, we were told that texting, facebook and BLOGGING are bad and cautioned us against them. SAY HUH?? Blogging?!?!? I can see facebook and texting being tools of evil in some cases. But my blog?!?!? SO I kind of had to laugh. They don't even read my blog!

Then we were compared to other members of this persons family. About how they hurt them too but those people are so good that they never say anything about it and how I should be more like that. Okay first off, I am me. No one else. I don't know the person I was being compared to either. I don't like being compared to others. Because we are all different and handle situations differently. I kind of like it that way. So the issue apparently was not that this person hurt others. No not at all. It was because I reacted to it and defended my children. Silly Silly me!!!

We (or I.. not sure who she was talking to at this point) were told that because we expressed our concerns about how our kids should be handled by this person, we are unforgiving and very un-Christlike and very hurtful. And because we don't force our kids to make pictures for or call these people, in turn they don't bother contacting them. We are also terrible examples to our kids and not doing them any service by being so. Okay let's look at our terrible example shall we?
*Temple Marriage
*attend all our church meetings and hold callings
*stay out of debt
*family home evenings
*strive to always be on time
*express our love for each other many many times a day
*put our childrens needs well above our own
*etc, etc, etc
My poor poor children!!! Sure we aren't perfect. Not by a long shot and never once have claimed to be. But we are working our butts off to ensure our kids have a happy and healthy life!

At this point, I turned it over to Jon because I knew I would say something I would regret. That was me trying to keep it decent on our end. And if you know my husband, he would never intentionally hurt anyone and he has an amazing way with words. So he basically responded in a manner that wasn't bashing. He expressed again the concerns we had with how our children were treated (they weren't treated bad mind you- just this persons interactions with them weren't very responsible for an adult) and he also tried to move forward and come up with a way we can all be in better communication and how they can be more of a part in our families lives and visa versa. He took much of the blame for how close we all AREN'T and the purpose of his email was to try to fix it.

Wellllll... this person must not have read his email because he was then attacked. Basically told him that no matter how much they hurt us, we are required to forgive every time.
Okay yes forgiveness is important. It's the Christlike thing to do. So we can forgive. But we don't have to keep putting ourselves in that position to have to forgive OVER AND OVER AND OVER again! I always thought that true repentance is acknowledging the mistake and promising to never do it again, right? And then it's forgiven and we all move on.. right? Maybe I'm just bonkers. So how many times does this person(s) have to continually hurt our family, make us feel like we are less than important, compare us constantly to others and let down my children before we finally just say screw it all?!?!? Sadly I think we have gotten to that point which was the whole purpose of the communication in the first place. We forgive.. knowing full well we will be having to do it again next time. So it's a constant cycle and yet we are the ones in the wrong for finally deciding enough was enough.

So anyways it ended up with this person saying they want nothing to do with us and our kids will suffer because of it. Yeah because they will miss the yearly token pay attention to them for a few hrs... Then she went on to call Jon childish and selfish (say what???). How is he childish and selfish??? He even stated that all he wanted was some of their time for our family.. no money, no gifts, JUST TIME! And that's selfish? She also told him that he is a whiny child who expects everyone to
"cowtail" around him. Seriously?? We were also told that in the bible, it says our own family will turn against us in the last day. I'm not familiar with that... can anyone find for me where it says that? All I can find was the hearts of the children will turn to their fathers... so quite the opposite. Help me out here! And it ended to say stay our of their lives and it will be a relief to not have our family around (yeah because we are around so much).

We were pretty much blown away by this to be honest. We were in the wrong over and over again for defending each other. I guess I have no clue what I'm supposed to do then when someone hurts those I love?

The saddest thing about this was the person who was going off over and over again was NOT the one person that Jon was mainly talking to about trying to fix their relationship. He emailed that person directly and got nothing. Even asked if he really wanted Jon and our family out of his life.. again nothing. Can't call him because he doesn't answer his phone. So who knows if that person has even read the emails back and forth because any normal and logical person could see the intent of them.

Just goes to show you that even though blood may relate a person, it doesn't make them family.

Congrats if you made it this far. I just needed a chance to defend myself and my family and since this is my journal so to speak, this is where I put it. Since they said they (and when I say they, it really means HER) don't care for the blogging and it's not good enough, it doesn't make much of a difference anyways.

Race for the cure 5k and other stuff

I'm quite behind so I'm going to do a quick catchup.
I was sick for a little while. I decided to quit caffeine and for those that know me, that was no easy task! I went from about 88oz's a day to nothing cold turkey! AHHHH! And my body sure let me have it! I had stomach problems FOR DAYS!!! But here we are 2.5weeks later and I'm feeling great!!!

I also ran the Susan G Kolman race for the cure on October 9th. It was so cool to see all the support for breast cancer awareness!! It was a 5k and of course I'm still not there to run the whole time but I still made the 3.whatever miles. I met up with Rob and Kristy but we didn't run together because I'm pretty slow but they waited for me after and it was so nice so see someone there when I finished! They're pretty rockin people! Then because I am who I am, it took me over 45minutes wandering all over to find the car. Big thanks to Roberta Gates for watching the kids for me so I could do this!

Ohh... and this cute couple found out not too long ago that they are expecting their first baby together! Kristy has a brilliant son and Rob has 2 adorable little girls so this is very exciting for them. Me too cuz I'm dubbing myself auntie Shannon! Congrats Rob and Kristy (or Brobar and KB).

Molly, Kristy and I after the race.

Kristy and I before getting out sweat on!!

Kids are doing well-
Reese has started taking piano lessons from Lacey W. in our ward and he absolutely loves it!!! He's doing awesome which makes me so proud!

Rielly is loving Kindergarten and has become such a sweet and kind hearted little girl. We had a nasty lice issue which is truely my nightmare come true in her hair. Did many treatments and hrs of coming out but hopefully we got them taken care of. Not sure where they came from.. school maybe?

Of course they both make me a little crazy but I just adore them so much!
(yes that is Reese tieing Rielly up to a branch... at her request! Trying to be burned at the stake?)

More posts to come... just need to find some extra time. Fall break so it's time to play!

Marathon- copied from Phatty

"I've learned that finishing a marathon isn't just an athletic achievement. It's a state of mind; a state of mind that says anything is possible."

I will echo this saying about a 1/2 marathon.
Indeed my friends.. anything is possible!
I DID IT!!!

I'm going to let go of that nagging voice in my head today that says I could have done better. I could have ran more. I could have finished faster. It's time to quiet that voice.

Instead I will now tell myself.... I did my best! I ran as much as I could run! I finished faster than I have ever done before! And why?!?! Because before, I would have NEVER had done this! I achieved a goal. And I crossed that finish line leaving behind the old me that had never attemped a 1/2 marathon before.

The morning started at 4am to Rielly throwing up all over her and our bathrooms. Good Morning!!! My dear dear Jon took care of that while I went and got myself ready for one of the biggest mornings of my life. She was okay thank goodness!

I got to Kristys at around 5:15 and we left for downtown around 5:30.
So much excitement in the air for sure!!!!!

People everywhere abt to do what I was abt to do. Many have done this a million times and many doing it for their first time. We were all there to accomplish the same task!

(sooo clueless!!!)

Jodie Messina kicked off the party with singing the National Athem (LOVE HER) and away we go!!! We started off with a good jog along with the 5000+ other ladies. I was excited and nervous and just ready to get it done!

Kristy and I both had written on our arms 13 things we wanted to talk about each mile and it was the best way to keep our minds positive and moving! Thats what I needed.... to just keep my mind going.

What really helped me get through this was the support of my family and Kristys family. At around mile 3, I saw my family and Rob Barkley on the side of the park cheering for me with signs and smiles. What a beautiful sight to see!!

Only 10more miles to go!

They were also there around mile 6, 9 and 11! Even Kristys folks Glenn and Terry were there at mile 11!!

How amazingly blessed am I to have them there pretty much the whole way to cheer me on???!!!

Mile 6

Mile 9

(around mile 11)

I started hurting around mile 7-8. My feet felt like I was walking on burning hot Az pavement. I actually tried to walk without shoes on... but yeah that didn't help.

That's when I think I started slowing down and wondering if I could finish this. I really should have taped my feet. But having already done a 13miler before, I knew I could do this.
There was plenty of water and gaterade to be had and so much motivation and cheering from the sidelines.
I had to keep going!
The last mile I had to let my mind and will take control because my body was screaming at me to stop! My feet were on fire! It was hard watching people pass me up and all the while I worried that Kristy was going nuts having to go so slow.
Irrational thinking does tend to set in.
Kristy wouldn't have been there if she didn't want to do this with me!
So I just had to visualize the end.
This was also the point where I swore anyone who does this for "fun" is CRAZY!!! And I kept thinking.. why in the world would I even want to do this again?!?! I won't lie to you- it was hard! And it hurt!!!!
But it was all worth it for what happens next.
That last .1mile was so overwhelming! I had my family right and Kristys family (which have become my family) before the finish line and Susie Hawkins and her kids right after. I had the goal in sight. I was doing it!!!! I remember my chest tightening up and I had to control myself to not just bust out in tears!!!!

And when we ran through the finish line, the MC said "Here comes Kristy and Shannon in their sparkly skirts"!!

Then Kristy hugged me and I realized I have just ran my first 1/2 marathon!!!! Who cares if I had to walk a lot. Who cares that it took 3.5hrs to finish. At that moment, I was a winner!!!!!

I bought this shirt the day before and it is exactly why I started this whole journey!!!

I love this face!

And once again, I wanted to thank my best friend Kristy Barkley! She stayed with me every step of the way through this whole process. And if she didn't give me this challenge, we would have never become the friends we are today. Spending so much time together, we have become rather close. She has taught me and inspired more than she could ever know. I love her family too (even you Brobar!). I am truely blessed!

And I have to thank my husband Jon- he has believed in me more than I believe in myself. Just to know that he is proud of me makes all the pain and tears and frustration in life worth it! I love you baby!
